Design Manager

Our client is looking for a Design Manager to start asap. Ideally the client would like someone to start on a permanent based but is willing to look at offering a contract to the successful candidate.


The location of work will ideally be office based in Bridgend, South Wales however, the client will consider remote working for candidates with the correct knowledge and experience.


The role will require the successful candidate to work 40 hours per week however, the client is happy to consider part time, or a job share if necessary.


The daily duties will include:


  • Reporting to the Head of Sales & Design, the postholder will be required to assist in the management and motivation of staff within the Design department to ensure that not only are designs and quotations prepared to an exceptionally high standard of technical content and dispatched to customers on time but that first class support is provided to ensure that end to end business processes are delivered to a high standard and to enable CMU Infrastructure Ltd to meet its safety, contractual, and legislative obligations. This role will oversee the design team based at our Bridgend office.

  • Ensure all design and quotation work carried out under and is completed in accordance with appropriate codes, pricing policy, regulations and end users.

  • Manage implementation of process and system changes in the Design department in liaison with management teams and ensure the necessary audits and reviews are undertaken to promote a consistent and high quality of work.

  • Review and challenge all aspects of the design and quotation process within the Design department and ensure that these activities are carried out to deliver the most cost effective contribution to the end to end processes and to meet the desired business outputs of safety, customer satisfaction and standards of service.

  • Develop, design and implement effective performance measures and controls for all aspects of CMU Infrastructure Ltd activities, in particular to the design and quotation process.

  • Comply with and achieve standards of service and KPI’s throughout all design and quotation work in the Design department.

  • Monitor the job register to ensure all enquiries are responded to in a timely and orderly manner with regard to priority, location and customer requirement (If required liaise with both Electric, Water & Gas designers to ensure deadlines are met)

  • Monitor new enquires, deciding priority and or suitability.

  • Post tender follow-up including attendance at technical and commercial meetings with clients and consultants.

  • Manage relationships with network owners, including GT’s, iGT’s, DNO’s, iDNO’s plus

  • Keep abreast of changes is regulation/legislation within the industry that may impact CMU Infrastructure Ltd and its products and services

  • Support wider business with resolution of technical queries

  • Develop and create own Vision for the Design Team, to meet future aspirations of the business,

  • Drive a Right First Time Culture, ensuring all queries, challenges, revisions and approvals are managed in a way enhances the customer journey

  • The job holder will be expected to follow all ISO 9001:2015 Quality procedures while carrying out their required duties, the job holder shall comply with the Company policy in respect of health and safety by taking reasonable care to ensure the health and safety of themselves and others.

  • The job holder will also ensure compliance with all statutory requirements.


The job holder will be principally accountable for the following:

  • Ensuring that suitable policies and procedures exist and are implemented to provide a safe working environment for all employees, whilst complying with statutory requirements.

  • Monitoring, audit and review all policies / procedures periodically to ensure continued compliance with requirements.

  • Carrying out Risk Assessments for all activities and provide guidance as to appropriate precautions to be taken to minimise risk.

  • Providing training and assessment following competency assessments for all Operational Staff.

  • Evaluating and planning of operational works / projects.

  • Liaison with clients and client representatives to ensure customer satisfaction.

Scope of work:


  • The job holder will Manage / Supervise any number of Staff that fall within their remit for example design technicians and support staff who participate and assist in the design function of the company.

  • Designs carried out by the technicians will be checked by the job holder for accuracy and will fall within current Gas Industry Standards and Legislation They will also be responsible for ensuring that all activities are performed in accordance with the appropriate standards, recommendations and procedures and comply with any legislative or statutory requirements.

  • The job holder will carry out technical and safety related audits of activities that fall within their responsibilities

  • As the job holder will need to carry out driving duties as part of the job, possession of a suitable licence is a requirement.

  • The job holder will operate in accordance with safety and operational procedures, legal standards, regulations and other codes.


The successful candidate will have the following:


  • To be considered for this role you will have at least 3-5 years previous experience within a multi utility design role and must have some previous managerial experience.

  • You will be an excellent communicator and have the ability to engage with stakeholders at all levels both internal and externally.

  • A Sound working knowledge of the utility environment in which CMU Infrastructure Ltd operates in the areas of Industry Codes of Practice, TCPM, legislation and regulation, expectations of the Health and Safety Executive and the company’s policies and procedures is essential for the role.

  • Experience of designing gas connections for new domestic, commercial and mixed use sites, SNAP/GasWorks design tools (we will consider candidates with experience of other design tools)

  • Experience of producing design submissions for adoption

  • Competent in the use of AutoCAD

  • Knowledge of gas, water and electrical industry regulations

  • Experience of preparing project budgets

  • Must be flexible and reliable


Desirable:

  • Experience of designing electrical and water connections for new domestic, commercial and mixed use sites
