The SBGI is the only trade association which represents virtually all the major players in the main sectors of the UK gas industry. It works closely with Government Departments and relevant organisations to promote a thriving UK gas industry based on high standards of safety, quality and service.

Representation of members’ vital interests - In the UK the SBGI promotes its members’ interests and achieves progress for the whole industry through its close working relation with: Government Departments and Agencies - particularly the DTI, Defra, OFGEM, ODPM and HSE,Energywatch - Gas and Electricity Consumers Council, Gas Safe Register, British Standards Institution, Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers, Energy Saving Trust and The Carbon Trust, Energy & Utility Skills and other trade Associations.

In Europe the SBGI operates throughits membership of CECED/CEFACD (cookers and fires), AFECOR (controls), GADAC (appliances), BEDAC (boilers) and Sector Forum Gas and the Association of the European Heating Industry (EHI).  Liaison is maintained with other relevant organisations and, where appropriate, issues are raised directly with the Commission.

The SBGI is actively involved in the development of British and European standards. Nominated representatives sit on over 50 BSI and CEN technical committees.
