The Company is saving £1,860 a year, with another £6,950 in the pipeline, after an ENWORKS resource efficiency review.
The Barrow-in-Furness based recruitment and consultancy specialist serves the natural gas and energy industries.
Its free on-site review by an ENWORKS adviser from the Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency (CREA) identified a wide range of energy-saving, recycling, fuel efficiency and staff awareness improvements.
Achieved savings
In the last 12 months, £1,860 in annual fuel savings have been achieved by encouraging staff to travel by train or car-share, using telephone conferencing for meetings, and changing a fuel system on a company car to LPG.
Monitoring of fuel bills has revealed annual vehicle fuel savings of over 3,320 litres, and CO2 emissions savings of almost nine tonnes a year.
With zero initial outlay, £1,590 has been saved so far and the predicted annual savings of £1,860 will start to accrue, year-on-year.
Ongoing work
The review uncovered scope to save on fuel by routinely using car-sharing between client’s offices and Barrow. The results are now being monitored and are expected to include cost savings of £928 a year and annual environmental savings of up to two tonnes of CO2.
Driver fuel efficiency training is currently being rolled out, to save the business £4,900 a year and nine tonnes of annual CO2 emissions, for eight individuals.
Further efficiencies are being made by reducing paper usage. Default printer settings have been changed to double-sided printing and staff are encouraged to re-use scrap paper and only print when it is strictly necessary. This could save another £280 a year, at no capital cost.
Diane Fowler, QHSE Manager at Wilcock Consulting said: “We are delighted with the savings we are making both in terms of our impact on the environment and financially. All staff are fully committed to this initiative and to making further and greater savings in the future.”
As a result of its efforts to improve its environmental performance, Wilcock Consulting has achieved the CBEN Gold Award, from the Cumbria Business Environment Network.
The Gold Award is presented annually to local businesses that attain a level of excellence in the identification, assessment and control of their environmental impacts and successfully implement a full environmental management system.
